The birth of Ava DuVernay occurred on the 24th of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise when she was a girl. Following graduation, she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she received degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay was a college student when she became fascinated by the production aspect of television journalism. She began her career as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the house and examining the garbage belonging to one of juries. After being disappointed in journalistic work by the assignments she was handed and deciding to go after the field of publicity. DuVernay joined a small studio as a junior publicist shortly after graduating from college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotions and lifestyle channels, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
